One Pocket - Billiard Game Rules

One Pocket is a unique pocket billiard game in which only two of the six pockets of the table are used in the game; one target ball for each of the players. The player's goal is to sink any of the 15 object balls into his target pocket and the first player who reaches a total score of 8 points is the winner of the game.

The game of one pocket is very popular among experienced and skilled pool players since it requires a usage of an advanced technique and sophisticated shooting skill. The one pocket games, usually those that take place in Derby City Classic are a major attraction for high stake gamblers.

The object of one pocket is to score eight object balls into one pocket. There are 15 object balls in the game, numbered 1 through 15, plus the cue ball. The players may shoot any of the balls; no calling is required. However, the object balls must be fallen into a specific target pocket; otherwise, the stroke is a foul.

The choice of pockets takes place by the starting player before the opening break shot occurs. The breaking player selects a corner pocket located on the foot end of the table while his opponent designate a corner pocket on the other foot end corner as his target pocket.

Scoring

A player scores 1 point for each legally pocketed ball.

If a player sinks a ball into his opponent's target pocket, he will be scored 1 point except if the player had scratched on the same shot.

When a player either commits a foul or scratches, he is penalized with one ball.

Opening Break

The breaking player is required to pocket an object ball into the targeted pocket legally or to cause the cue ball to hit an object ball and then to cause an object ball or more to contact a cushion; otherwise, it is a foul.

According to one pocket rules, the cue ball is not required to strike a rail on the opening break.

One Pocket Rules

  • In order to commit a legal shot, the player must cause the cue ball to contact an object ball and then to send an object ball into the pocket or cause the cue ball or a numbered ball to hit a cushion. To fail in meeting those requirements will be seen as a foul.

  • When a player pockets an object ball into the target pocket legally, he may continue shooting at the table until he fails in pocketing a ball into the target pocket legally. If a player commits three consecutive fouls, he loses the game.

  • Pocketing a ball into any of the four pockets that are not target pockets is illegal. The illegally pocketed balls will be spotted.
